Whithorn is a fascinating village and former royal burgh in the Machars, that triangular peninsula south of Newton Stewart. While the Romans still occupied Britain, it was here in 397 that St. Ninian established the first Christian church in Scotland. The monastery, now in ruins, was built on top of it and was a very important place of pilgrimage over the years. It is instructive to visit the remains and the two adjoining museums, all accessible with one ticket. Withorn is also known for its harbor called Isle of Withorn. The peninsula has been classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
