Founded in 1792 by the wealthy merchant William Douglas, the town was laid out in a grid pattern around King Street, similar to New Town in Edinburgh. However, the architecture is not really comparable and Castle Douglas is a small country town that enjoys the attraction of its surroundings. The pre-existing Threave Castle was one of the seats of the "Black" Earls of Douglas, after they left Hermitage Castle in the Borders. Their opposition to the other branch of their family, the "Red", caused them to be deposed in 1455. Cardoness Castle, the home of the McCullochs, is also worth mentioning. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly nature that brings the most people here.
