Peebles is a pleasant, quiet town surrounded by mysterious, wooded hills. Until the 1960s, it was the heart of the wool industry, before becoming a popular resort, especially for Edinburgh residents. The Glentress Forest to the north is particularly good for hiking and is also home to one of Go Ape's rope parks, which has several locations in the UK (goape.co.uk). Ideal place for nature weekends near the capital. The Borders Buses X62 connects Peebles to Edinburgh (1h10), Melrose (1h15) and Galashiels (45 minutes), (www.travelinescotland.com).
