29 km from Edinburgh and 54 km from Glasgow, this city is easily accessible by bus or train. It takes about 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh. Designated as a royal burgh by David the First, this city was to become the summer residence of the Stuarts. The city is best known for the palace where James V was born in 1512 and his daughter, Mary, in 1542. The St. Michael Parish Church, a beautiful medieval church dedicated to the archangel St. Michael, is also worth a visit. Along the High Street, you can also see a group of houses dating from the 17th century. You can see the picturesque Fountain of St. Michael which dates from 1720.
