29 km from Edinburgh and 54 km from Glasgow, this city is easily accessible by bus or train. About 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh. Designated as a royal burgh by David I, this town was to become the Stuarts' holiday resort.
The city is mainly known for its palace where James V was born in 1512 and his daughter, Mary, in 1542. The St. Michael Parish Church, a lovely medieval church dedicated to the Archangel St. Michael, is also worth a visit. A group of houses dating from the 17th century can also be seen along the High Street. In this town, once also famous for its many fountains, you can also visit the picturesque Fountain of St. Michael, which dates back to 1720.
