The Port of Bilbao is the most important seaport in the Basque Country and one of the most important in the Bay of Biscay. Located in the Nervión ria, it offers easy access to the city of Bilbao. Open since 1300, the port has a tonnage capacity of 40,000 tons and handled 172,626 tons of traffic in 2007. It is well connected with a vast distribution radius, and has quays and terminals to facilitate port operations. The port also offers a ferry service to Portsmouth and Rosslare, as well as a passenger terminal for cruises. There are ferry terminals at Getxo 1, Getxo 2 and Getxo 3, with parking options available for cruise passengers. The Port of Bilbao has a long history and is managed by the Port Authority, which is responsible for infrastructure development, safety and innovation.
