Located in front of the Cantabrian Sea, Bermeo (16,000 inhabitants) is a town almost entirely dedicated to fishing. In the beautiful Sabino Arana square, you can find the 18th century town hall and the Santa María church, while the town's casino has an architecture inspired by French castles and the Fisherman's Museum is located in the Ercilla tower. Outside the old town, the Gothic cloister of the San Francisco convent (1357) is worth seeing. On July 22, the Madalenak of Bermeo takes place, a maritime procession that joins Bermeo, Elantxobe and Mundaka, to commemorate the end of a dispute between the inhabitants of these towns.
