MUSEO VASCO DEL FERROCARRIL
Museum that presents one of the most complete railway collections in Europe with vehicles of all types in Azpeitia
The Urola Railway was a narrow-gauge railway line that linked the municipalities of Zumárraga and Zumaia through the valley of the River Urola. Inaugurated in 1926 by King Alfonso XIII, it was the first electric railway in all of Spain. After its closure in 1988, the creation of the Museo Vasco del Ferrocarril (Basque Railway Museum) in Azpeitia preserved its old steam locomotives and various types of wagons.
The museum presents one of the most complete railway collections in Europe, with vehicles of all types: steam locomotives, self-propelled vehicles, wooden or metal wagons... Some of them are more than 100 years old, and are the subject of a remarkable and considerable amount of conservation work. The former mechanical workshop of the Urola Railway can also be seen, whose facilities have been perfectly preserved since 1925. Also worth seeing: model trains, the evolution of uniforms from the 19th century to the present day, black and white photographs and a remarkable collection of railway clocks... Something to delight young and old alike!
On weekends, the museum organises excursions from Azpeitia to Lazao on board the Aurrera steam locomotive along the old Urola railway line. These excursions take place on Saturdays and Sundays between Easter and the beginning of November. A nice trip back in time!
