Roncesvalles-Orreaga is the most important point on the Way of St. James in Navarre. Formed around the old pilgrims' hospital, built in the 10th century, the village quickly established itself as a main stopover. The village of Roncesvalles, located in a green setting, is surmounted by its Real Colegiata with solid walls, a 13th-century architectural complex that was founded as a hospital institution for the many pilgrims passing through here, sheltered by the Ibañeta pass. Much of the complex, however, dates from the post-civil war period, due to the many fires and destruction suffered over the centuries
