It was here that the famous battle took place in which the Vascons faced Charlemagne's army that had just devastated Pamplona (presumably, the battle would have taken place at the current Roncesvalles pass, but a little further south, on Spanish territory). The Frankish army lost the battle, which nevertheless gave birth to what has become a major work of literature, La Chanson de Roland. At that time, the village hermitage was equipped with a bell whose sound guided pilgrims on foggy days. Nowadays, it has been replaced by a modern chapel, inaugurated in 1965, built not far from the old chapel of San Salvador de Ibañeta.
