The last major city before the Belarusian border coming from Moscow, Smolensk has a long history. Its strategic position, on the banks of the Dnieper River and on the main road leading to Moscow from Europe, has made it the scene of bloody battles from Napoleon to Hitler. Its proximity to Europe gives it a special character and its population can boast of a long cultural tradition. The city has been under the sign of Russian classical music since the 19th century, when the composer Mikhail Glinka, a figure of Russian Romantic music from the region, returned to Smolensk after studying in Europe and became famous for the concerts he gave there
