The small and picturesque town of Myshkin gave its name to the hero of Dostoyevsky's The Idiot and is strangely the capital of mice where every year (end of August, beginning of September) a big festival is dedicated to them. The first urban center appeared there in the 11th century, before being completely razed in 1228 by Bathu Khan, son of Genghis Khan and then abandoned by its inhabitants. Rebuilt a century later, the village became from then on a center of the river trade which actively participates in the timber trade and in the carpentry craft. It is from here, for example, that the Svizhask fortifications upstream from Kazan originate.
