At the beginning of the 20th century, the town was very popular with wealthy Englishmen who came to take advantage of the thermal springs. Victorian houses and chic hotels soon sprang up everywhere, transforming the town. But the spa business has been in steep decline since the Second World War. The town is dotted with parks and grand Victorian houses. It's pleasant to stroll around the lake and in Rock Park, where a mineral water fountain still flows. There's also a museum housing a collection of over 250 bicycles, from 1819 to the present day, including "Penny Farthings", the velocipede symbol of the late 19th century.
