Named after the waterfalls above the town, "the Wye Falls", the small town in the heart of Wales' most rural region is a pleasant surprise for visitors. The town is best known for the "Rebecca Riots" of 1840, during revolts against the toll booths that dotted country and town roads at the time. The Rebecca Riots saw men dressed as women destroy toll gates in protest at the high cost of the charges. Today, Rhayader is famous for its sheep fair and for having the most pubs per capita in Britain!
