Birthplace of Robert Owen (1771-1858), considered the founding father of British socialism, an industrialist who made his fortune with a cotton mill in Manchester and fought for greater social justice. An interesting museum is dedicated to his life and work: he raised the legal working age from 10 to 12 and imposed compulsory education for his workers. Another figure marked the fate of the city: Laura Ashley! In 1984, at the height of her success, the creator established the head office of her company in Newtown and opened a series of garment workshops that created 900 jobs in the region.
