In the 16th century it was one of the most dynamic trading centres in the United Kingdom. A market has been held here every Wednesday on the main street since 1291! Today Machynlleth is a small town in the Dyfi Valley, surrounded by mountains and large areas of protected nature. No surprise then, when, in the 1960s, the town was taken over by environmentalists. They were behind the creation of the Centre for Alternative Technologies (C.A.T.), located to the north of the town. At the junction of the city's two arteries is a clock tower built in 1873. Machynlleth could well have been the capital of the country since its name was on the list of potential capitals in the 1950s!For the more intrepid, the Welsh name of the city is pronounced "Mahruntleth".
