Holyhead is the largest town on both Holy Island and Anglesey, with around 12,000 inhabitants. A port town and the capital of Holy Island, it boasts a major terminal for ferries to Ireland. Holyhead is known as a dynamic ferry port. However, the town also boasts interesting sites, such as the walls of the Roman citadel, and a lively central district.Holyhead is also the ideal starting point for crossing the Irish Sea. Signed in 1801, the Treaty of Union between England and Ireland was to have a lasting impact on the destiny of this peaceful little port, and was the primary cause of its growth into a major trading hub. To improve connections with Dublin, the British government built a new road linking London to the port of Holyhead, now known as the A5. As passenger traffic became heavier, ferries larger and embarkations more frequent, Holyhead became the main port of call for departures to Ireland, England and Wales. The harbour is home to Europe's largest breakwater, completed in 1873 and 2.4 km long! A park of several hectares, punctuated by artificial lakes, surrounds it. But the city's latest addition is the Celtic Gateway! Inaugurated in October 2006, this ultra-design footbridge links the ferry terminal to the city center, reminding travelers that the island's interior is also worth a visit..
