In the heart of Snowdonia, Blaenau Ffestiniog is the kingdom of slate. Grey as far as the eye can see, hollowed-out mountains, veritable galleries beneath our feet, piles of slate on every hillside - this is the region of the "black faces". A visit to one of these mines is a must to fully understand the Welsh people, their past and their culture. The living conditions are appalling, but there's also a great deal of pride in this trade, often handed down from father to son. Many mines are now closed. Gloddfa Ganol Slate Mine, the world's largest slate mine, closed in 2010. Only Llechwedd Slate Caverns remains in operation today. Many visitors come to Blaenau Ffestiniog by steam train from Porthmadog, visit the slate mine and leave again. Yet this town is well worth discovering, with its strong social fabric, wonderful welcome and history around every corner (even on the sidewalks!). Indeed, for several years now, the community has been working on its image and promoting its heritage. Slate is getting a facelift and becoming an architectural feature of the town.
