A quiet little town, where the Celtic language is still widely spoken. "Dolwydd" means meadow in Welsh and Elan is a woman's name, so it could be translated into French as "Prairie d'Elan". Just a few minutes' drive away are the ruins of Dolwyddelan Castle, offering superb views of the surrounding Snowdonia mountains. Its stones were the birthplace in 1173 of Prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), grandfather of Llywelyn the Last, who took control of Shrewsbury in 1215 and again in 1232, defeating the English army. Its perfectly preserved square tower is well worth a visit.
