The old town is criss-crossed by a main street lined with Victorian houses and surrounded by ramparts, vestiges of its medieval past. Mainly rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, the streets have retained their medieval layout. The town's oldest houses can be found on Westgate Hill, next to the impressive Norman castle. From the town's port, an important trading center until the arrival of the railroads, you can now set sail for Ireland. Once you've visited the castle and the town museum, located on the port, head for the surrounding area. Splendid beaches are also just a 20-minute drive away.
