Swansea grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Ships left the port loaded with copper and, later, heavy metals. The Morgans Hotel (1902) bears witness to the town's prestigious past: at the time, the building housed the offices of the port authority. After the Second World War, however, Swansea suffered a severe decline. In the 1970s, the town began to specialize in new technologies. The redevelopment of the eastern quarter is proof of Swansea's ability to modernize, and the National Waterfront Museum has opened its doors. Today, Swansea is a dynamic city with a thriving arts scene, as evidenced by its museums, galleries and music scene.
