The village was a major center of coal and iron mining, which had the effect of completely overturning its social organization: radically different working environment, new type of housing built for the workers who came en masse... During this great industrial boom, the population reached up to 12,500 and the number of pubs rose to 70! Perhaps it's here, more than anywhere else, that we understand why the Welsh consider themselves to be the "first industrial nation". In 2000, Blaenavon was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, underlining its major role in the Industrial Revolution.
