An area with a population of around 55,000, Merthyr Tydfil is home to large deposits of hard coal and iron ore, hence its importance and rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution. It was here, in fact, that the first steam locomotive was used to transport mining resources on February 21, 1804. Today, the town is famous for one of the Great Little Trains of Wales, the Brecon Mountain Railway, which takes passengers through the National Park. The nearest town to Brecon by train is Cardiff. There is a bus service to Brecon, but check the timetable as it runs very infrequently.
