Literally the "High Pines". City of 430 000 inhabitants, Takamatsu is the chief town of Kagawa-ken. Its geographical situation (located in the north of the island, bordering the inland sea) makes it the main access to the island of Shikoku. Although it was almost entirely razed to the ground by bombing during the Second World War, Takamatsu, like many other large Japanese cities, has managed to rise from its ashes. Today, it competes with Matsuyama, located to the west, which is trying to supplant it from an economic and industrial point of view. Located in a pleasant hilly environment, the city has a number of assets that it has been able to develop, such as the magnificent Ritsurin-koen garden, or Shikoku-mura, in Yashima. Since 1988, Sakaide (Kagawa) has been linked to the island of Honshu by the very impressive Seto-Ohashi Bridge, which is no less than 13.1 km long and can be crossed by car or train, offering spectacular views.
