The capital of Aomori-ken Prefecture, in the very north of Honshū, Aomori, with a population of just over 300,000, is a major fishing port and shipyard. It became an active port as early as the 17th century. It was not until the Meiji period that the city supplanted Hirosaki to become a county. It was almost razed during the Second World War. It is from Aomori that the famous Seikan Tunnel (the longest in the world) runs from Honshū to Hokkaidō, passing Cape Tappi. It is also in this department that Japan is investing huge sums to carry out the national reprocessing of nuclear fuel, in Rokkasho-mura.
