Aikawa Municipality is located about 35 km southwest of Ryōtsu. It can be reached by the ridge road or the ledge road. It was in Aikawa that gold was discovered in 1601. The mines were intensively exploited during the Edo period. At the peak of mining, about 100,000 people lived in the small village of Aikawa. In 1867, the mines were closed. From then on, the population of the village only decreased. Today, the small town is quite a tourist destination. To enjoy the surroundings, visit the Aikawa tourist information office.
