Hakone is part of the huge Hakone-Fuji-Izu Nature Park which extends to Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula. This region, intensely volcanic, abounds in onsen. Because of its proximity to Tokyo, it has become a vast recreational area where people from the capital come to rest and take the air in the mountains. One of the main attractions, apart from the beautiful view of Mount Fuji, is the boat cruise on Lake Ashi, followed by the cable car ride up to Owakudani, the sulphur valley. Scattered throughout the mountains are numerous art and craft museums. Gōra, Sengokuhara, Moto-hakone, without being strictly speaking cities, are small stops in the tourist circuit around Hakone.
