The fame of this potter's town, located in Tochigi, comes from the presence, since the thirties, of the potter Hamada Shōji (1894-1978) who was one of the pillars of the popular movement of this art. His decisive influence attracted many Japanese and foreign potters. But Mashiko was already known for his indigo-dyed pottery since the Edo period (1615-1867).
