Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a 605,331-acre natural area located in the Nevada desert, straddling the southern state and northwestern Arizona border. Operated by the National Park Service, the area follows the course of the Colorado River from the western boundary of Grand Canyon National Park north of Laughlin, Nevada, and Bullhead City, Arizona. It includes Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, created when the Hoover Dam was commissioned in 1936 and the Davis Dam in 1951, respectively.Lake Mead, the largest body of water, took about 20 years to fill after the Hoover Dam was built and now has a surface area of 63,455 ha. With its 35 billion cubic meters, its role is crucial for the southwest of the country, as it supplies water to the populations of Nevada, Arizona and Southern California. However, due to severe droughts and excessive consumption, the lake is gradually being drained. No replacement solution has been found to date, except for the possible construction of a pipeline that would draw water from elsewhere, for example from the Great Basin.
