For long-distance travellers - or French Riviera enthusiasts - this pretty coastal town, often compared to Cannes, is well worth a visit to immerse yourself in the Côte d'Azur atmosphere. Relatively sprawling, the municipality stretches over both land and water, in what forms Newport Bay. We can distinguish :Balboa Peninsula. Home to most of the region's famous mansions, it boasts a pretty beach that's a favorite with surfers. Don't miss the stilted Balboa Pier, at the end of which you'll find the famous Ruby's Diner. In addition to its main road, the peninsula is connected by ferry to Balboa Island, itself connected to the rest of the city by a bridge.Balboa Island. Once you've taken the ferry, you'll arrive on this charming little island. Following Park Avenue eastward, you'll come to Marine Avenue, a succession of restaurants, bakeries and stores selling flowers, ready-to-wear, books and souvenirs. From people sitting on terraces to those on benches eating pastries, immerse yourself in the local bustle before continuing to S. Bay Front, where you'll come across locals out walking their dogs or taking a brisk walk. Take a seat on one of the benches to soak up the atmosphere, with sailboats and yachts in the background. While you're there, try the island's specialty, frozen banana: a banana glazed with hot chocolate, available at Dad's Donuts and Bakery.Mostly residential, Balboa Island is best explored on foot. You'll stroll between the villas of multi-millionaires - many proudly displaying the American flag - built in extreme promiscuity, with over 3,000 people living on 0.5 km². Note that some mansions are incredibly well decorated for Halloween and Christmas.
