Although it's in California, Solvang is a Danish town: everyone here feels Danish and lives the Danish way. It all dates back to 1911, when a group of Danish teachers were looking to settle here and set up a school. Today, it's worth spending half a day here, among the thatched, half-timbered houses and stores selling Nordic specialities. It's all very kitsch, but quite fun. The third weekend in September is the best time to visit: it's the rendezvous for Danish Days, a three-day event dedicated to the city's cultural heritage. It's been held here since 1936.
