Napa is the southernmost town in the valley from which it takes its name. The urban heart of the Napa Valley, it nevertheless appears more authentic than its northern neighbors such as Yountville. Its name probably comes from that of a small Indian village once located south of the town. The first American farmers settled here in 1830. Forty years later, most of the valley's Indians had died of smallpox and other diseases that had arrived with the settlers. The last survivors were deported to the Alexander Valley, where a few of their descendants still live on federal reservations.Napa's development dates back to the Gold Rush. Exhausted prospectors found refuge in this town with its pleasant climate, far from the cold and epidemics of the Sierra Nevada. They were hired as cowboys or lumberjacks. The county's banks and businesses moved to Napa at the same time as agriculture and wine production intensified in the north. The town, now home to 70,000 inhabitants, boasts numerous restaurants and, of course, wine tasting rooms in addition to traditional American bars. There's also a well-stocked farmers' market. You'll find a number of interesting boutiques and art galleries on First Street. And don't forget to visit the Napa Valley Art Walk, a walkable outdoor public art exhibit featuring eight sculptures.
