On joining the coastal road beyond Vardenik towards Vardenis, a stop is required at the village of Artsvanist, an eagle's nest, as its name indicates in Armenian. Situated on the lakeside, among the forests, there are stelae (13th to 17th century), less ancient than the monastery of Vanevan, founded in the year 903. Rather flat, the shores of the lake, which can be seen here in all its extent, are dominated by the rounded summit of Mount Vardénis (3,522 m), the highest point of the eponymous volcanic chain, which gave its name to the chief town of the region.
