With origins dating back to the 1930s, Valley of Fire is Nevada's first "official" state park. Only 75 km northeast of Las Vegas, on the road to Utah, this site absolutely deserves a half-day stop. Much less touristy than the must-see parks of the American West, it can be enjoyed peacefully, along relatively uncrowded trails and breathtaking views. Moreover, it lends itself particularly well to children, the hikes being short and easy, and the rocks suitable for gentle climbing. The entrance itself is incredible: you roll between touches of green and red with countless shades, some rock formations are similar to solidified lava. An almost incandescent stone that we owe to the sand of the dunes, brought by the wind. For its part, the gray stone is what remains of the sea bed that covered this area of 20,000 ha, more than 300 million years ago. In addition to these geological curiosities, one can spot traces of the essentially nocturnal fauna that populates the territory: coyotes, hares, snakes, lizards, squirrels... Also on the program: petroglyphs dating back to the Paleo-Indian era.
