Petit Futé's opinion on MUSÉE GROENINGE

Plate millesim 2022

Whoever comes to Bruges cannot remain insensitive to the Flemish primitive painters. This internationally renowned temple of local and regional painting houses a masterly permanent collection in its renovated rooms, which will be completely redesigned in 2020. The collection covers almost six centuries of Flemish painting culture. We start with the works of the great primitives and end with expressionism. The children of the country are honored, and the artists of Bruges are in the line of fire. Among them, van Eyck, not born but died in Bruges. Among his remarkable works, we discover the Virgin with Canon, which he made in 1436, exhibited in its original frame. Also on display are Memling'sAnnunciation and two wooden panels depicting Simon Marmion's Virgin weeping for Christ. But also Hugo Van Der Goes' masterpiece, The Death of the Virgin, dating from 1470, and many other masterpieces by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, Gerard David, Pieter Pourbus, Jan Provoost. All periods from the 15th century to the present day are represented by their most emblematic artists: the masters of the Renaissance and the Baroque period, or the most impressive paintings of the neoclassical and realist periods of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also the Flemish symbolists and expressionists or the surrealists such as Jean Delville, Fernand Khnopff, René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Emile Claus, Bram Bogaert, Pierre Alechinsky or the Ostend artist James Ensor... to name but a few.
