The pearl of Calabrian tourism is a pretty town perched on a rocky promontory, where the crowd of tourists is more compact than elsewhere. Tropea exudes a nonchalant charm, where everything invites you to laze around and enjoy the passeggiata in the narrow streets of the old town that lead to viewpoints overlooking the sea. Not to mention the gastronomy, the city being the homeland of a small red onion. Known to Italians and a few foreigners, it is one of the many places in Calabria where prices do not soar. The seat of a bishopric in the 7th century, Tropea had its glory days under the Angevins and the Aragonese, as the carved porches and balconies of its houses testify.
