Maratea is the main Lucanian town on the 30 km of Tyrrhenian coastline granted to Basilicata by its neighbors, Campania and Calabria. The municipality of Maratea is made up of a group of towns spread out along the coast, facing the Gulf of Policastro. In the historical center, the balconies facing the mountain indicate that the ancestors of the inhabitants of Maratea were not fishermen. In fact, the village was built by shepherds who came to spend the winter here. Dominating the panorama from the top of Mount San Biagio, Christ the Redeemer himself does not reach out to the sea but inland... The town has kept its medieval aspect, with its winding streets, its stairs, its small squares where some palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries still stand (De Lieto, Picone, Calderano, d'Orlando). The center is full of charm and is full of small souvenir shops. In the main square, you can enjoy a granita and stroll away from the crowded beach in summer. Maratea is perhaps the only real seaside resort in Basilicata. In fact, there is no other seaside resort in the region that is as attractive or as well equipped. Maratea is oriented towards tourism, but a rather select tourism.
