On the SS106 Taranto-Sibari, one gradually enters the harsh landscapes characteristic of Basilicata. As you approach the town of Aliano, you will discover the strange coves that extend to the Apennine mountains. Built on a hill, in the middle of a desert landscape reminiscent of Turkish Cappadocia (also known for its troglodyte dwellings), Aliano was the place of exile of Carlo Levi, who stayed there for eight and a half months between 1935 and 1936. The town appears in his novel Christ Stopped at Eboli under the name of Gagliano. The site is remarkable for its original location and for the beauty of its environment.
