An Italian parliamentary decree dated 1906 designates the city of Melfi as "an oasis in the desert of Basilicata". Center of the ancient Lucanian culture in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C., capital of the county of Puglia in the Norman period, residence of Frederick II, whose castle is the most famous in the region, Melfi is not a stopover like any other... Although damaged by the earthquake of 1980, this city with a brilliant past has lost none of its character. Today it is a medieval town of great historical wealth, which can be visited on foot, and a modern and peaceful town that lives on its wine, olives and wood.
