Like Rapolla, not far from there, it is a village of Albanian origin that has preserved its ethnic and linguistic traditions. Its name comes from Barrale or Barelium, which referred to the rights of the Greeks. This small picturesque village, perched on a hill at the foot of Mount Vulture, has caves dug into the tufa rock, once inhabited and now used as cellars for the ageing of the local wine Aglianico. The most interesting monuments are the mother church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the beautiful baroque fountain of Steccato. Barile has a luxurious inn, the Locanda del Palazzo, known in the area for the quality of its cuisine.
