Atella is an agricultural town on a steep hillside, 500 meters above sea level. It was founded in the 14th century by Robert I of Anjou, who wanted to repopulate the area after the rebellion of the Ghibellines (a group that sided with Frederick II during the conflict between the emperor and Pope Gregory IX, and later Innocent IV) and the subsequent repression in 1268. One stops gladly at the cathedral of Santa Maria ad Nives, built in the 16th century and restored after the earthquake of 1980, with its stone portal of Islamic inspiration. The interior, refurbished in the Baroque style, displays paintings and wooden sculptures from the 14th and 15th centuries.
