Perched on the heights of the Basento plain, at an altitude of more than 819 meters, Potenza is the highest regional capital in Italy. It was founded in the 4th century B.C. on the site of the important Lucanian center of Serra di Vaglio. In 1980 it was devastated by a terrible earthquake and then partially rebuilt. Its ancient core is located on the left bank of the Basento river. In the last few decades, new districts have been added, built lengthwise like "snakes"(serpenti), modern and very busy. The city is full of ups and downs, so much so that it takes a while to get to the center. This capital of Basilicata does not have any great monuments, but it has an atmosphere that is particular to mountain towns, fresh, young and dynamic.Via Pretoria is the backbone of the city center, which it crosses from west to east. Very commercial and "trendy", this street concentrates most of the bars and restaurants. It is here that the traditional passeggiata is enjoyed. Via Pretoria runs along Piazza Pagano, which has an aristocratic appearance and is faced by two important buildings: the Palazzo del Governo, to the north, and the Teatro Francesco Stabile, to the west. Next to the former courthouse, in a small recess, is the beautiful church of San Francesco d'Assisi, one of the few buildings in Potenza to have retained its original appearance. Further on, on the largo Duomo, is the cathedral and, nearby, the archaeological museum.
