An agricultural, art and historical town, its destiny was linked, like many of its neighbours, to that of Emperor Frederick II. The latter had it rebuilt after the destruction of the Saracens. He then brought together Latin, Greek and Jewish populations. Finally, he endowed the city with an imposing cathedral which still dominates the site. Known as the "lioness of Puglia" for its acts of resistance in history, Altamura is also known worldwide for the production of a wide variety of breads to be tasted in one of its panetterie (bakeries). Nearby is the cave of Lamalunga, where the Altamura man, who lived 200,000 years ago, was discovered.
