Gravina means "crevice" in Italian, which explains the amazing scenery that surrounds the city: a canyon riddled with caves. The entire area, visible from the terrace in front of the city's cathedral, is carved out by torrents from Basilicata. In the center of the crevice is one of the largest underground churches in Puglia, the church of San Michele. The city itself seems to have been carved in the rock as it is omnipresent between the facades of the houses. The city is dominated by the cathedral which dates back to the Norman period, but was rebuilt with a Renaissance facade in the 15th century.
