Following the SS16 from Bari to Foggia, on the coastline, a short stop is necessary when the tall silhouette of the cathedral of Bisceglie stands out on the Adriatic horizon. The town enjoyed a period of splendour under Norman rule and later became the stronghold of the powerful Del Balzo family. The old town has preserved some medieval remains, such as the remains of the castle built by Count Piero Normanno (11th century) and the majestic cathedral (1073). Bisceglie is also known as the "city of dolmens" and you can see some beautiful specimens just a few steps away. Finally, in one of its pastry shops, try the sospiri, the local specialty.
