The somewhat austere surroundings of this coastal town bear witness to its port and industrial past. The town is known as the ancient Melphi (or Melphitica) of the Middle Ages, but was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the many necropolises, including that of Pulo, discovered in the vicinity. In the old town centre, built on a promontory, Molfetta has preserved medieval remains from the time when the town was an episcopal see. The Duomo is dedicated to San Corrado, a member of the Swabian house and uncle of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who, according to legend, came to the grotto of Santa Maria, near Modugno, to die.
