22 km south of Bari, on the Adriatic coast, Mola is an ancient embarkation point for the prosperous Orient in the Middle Ages. Today, it is a small town without much importance, but a relatively important fishing port. It has kept two testimonies of its past: the Angevin castle and the cathedral. The castle was built in the 13th century at the behest of Charles I of Anjou to defend the port against pirate incursions. It was then refurbished and reinforced by the Spanish. Of Romanesque origin, the cathedral was rebuilt in the 16th century in a curious heterogeneous style, mixing the Apulian tradition (rose window, atlatls) with Renaissance elements.
