In the 3rd century Bitonto became a place of pilgrimage during the spread of Christianity. After suffering successive invasions, the city came under Byzantine rule and rebelled by joining the League of Apulian Municipalities. In 1670 Bitonto became the second city (after Lecce) in terms of population and intellectual dynamism, thanks to the birth of literary circles, academies and art workshops, from which emerged Tommaso Traetta (precursor of the reform of melodrama in music), Vitale Giordano (scholar of Euclid's theorem) and Bonifacio Nicola Logroscino (star of the opera buffa). Bitonto, 20 km from Bari, has a cathedral in the pure Romanesque style.
