South of Huila, 240 km from Neiva, San Agustín is a small village near the source of the Magdalena River, which flows 1,500 km further north into the Caribbean Sea. It is known as much for its archaeological sites as for its spectacular landscapes, which are well worth the trip. The valleys are winding, the canyons steep and the rivers fast. You pass through fields of coffee, sugar cane, bananas, lulos and groves of guadua.
