The capital of the department of Huila was founded in 1539 by Sebastian of Belalcazar, on the banks of the Magdalena River, at 490 meters above sea level. It is an economic center of the first order, due to its livestock, agriculture and some industries. It is a city of passage on the way to two of the main archaeological parks of the country, San Agustin (5 hours away) and Tierradentro (4 hours away). It is also a transit point to reach the Tatacoa desert, 38 km away. There are some tourist sites in Neiva, but the city is above all a stopover for travelers. The Parque Santander is the nerve center of the city, surrounded by official buildings and the Cathedral of La Inmaculada Concepción, historical and architectural heritage of the city. The main event takes place around June 22. It is the National Bambuco Festival, which celebrates the typical dance of these mountainous regions. Improvisations and parades animate the streets.
