46 km northwest of Guapi, Gorgona is a real paradise for nature lovers and scuba divers. This island (24 km² for the main island), located 56 km from the mainland coast and whose highest point is Cerro Trinidad (338 m), has been protected by the status of national park since 1984. 97% of its surface (61,687 ha) is made up of coral reefs. Isla Gorgona National Natural Park is part of the Tropical East Pacific Marine Corridor, which also includes the Malpelo Wildlife Sanctuary, Galapagos National Park (Ecuador), Coiba (Panama) and Los Cocos (Costa Rica). 85% of the island is covered by a dense tropical forest, where no less than forty botanical families have been identified. You will be able to discover many animals on land (capuchin monkeys, snakes, iguanas, etc.), but especially at sea, where sperm whales and humpback whales provide the show from July to October, sometimes only a few dozen meters from the beautiful beaches. The whales arrive after a long journey from Antarctica to mate and give birth to calves that measure an average of 4 meters and weigh 1 ton at birth! Divers will also enjoy the sight of hammerhead sharks, turtles, barracudas, groupers, octopuses, not to mention the beautiful colored corals around the island... Back on land, a lizard should catch your attention, because it is all blue! This little wonder is an endemic species that shares the place with four species of venomous snakes: the rabo de aji (with yellow and black rings), the coral (red, white and black rings), the talla X (the most dangerous of all) and the pelamis or "Pacific sea snake" (found at sea). It should be noted that alcohol is forbidden on the island, because it is very delicate to apply a vaccine against a talla X sting when a person is soaked in alcohol.
